Kryptograf by Olav Vikingstad.

In honour of their latest album ‘The Eldorardo Spell’, we spoke to Kryptograf guitarist Vegard Bachmann Strand about recording and working with Iver Sandøy (Enslaved) & Gaahl (Gaahls Wyrd, formerly of Gorgoroth), his early influences as a guitarist as well as, of course, his choice of Orange.

Kryptograf, can we get some background on the band?
We have been playing together in different bands since 2016. We all met when we went to the same school in Trondheim. I guess it all started when Odd and I became roommates in 2015 and started making music together. We decided to start Kryptograf in 2019 because we wanted a fresh start after playing for years in a different band with the same lineup plus a singer. We wanted a band with a clear direction where we could really dig into the proto-doom stuff.

Kryptograf just released their second album, “The Eldorado Spell”, what can you tell us about it?
When we started writing our new album we didn’t want to make the same album twice. While our first album was quite focused on the more primitive era of hard and psychedelic rock of the late 60’s, «The Eldorado Spell» kicks things up a notch. This album has more of a mid 70’s heavy metal feel to it as well as it contains more progressive elements and melodic twists. There’s also some inspiration from 60’s folk rock groups like Pentangle and Fairport Convention. The album was recorded live, mixed and mastered in Solslottet studio by our producer Iver Sandøy in 2021. He did our first album as well and we really like working with him. There is also some guest appearances on this album. Some vocals done by Kristian Eivind Espedal (Gaahl) and some trumpet by Ørjan Hammer Volvik.

How did you get Gaahl involved on the record, and how was it working with him? Obviously he’s quite a prominent musician not just in the Norwegian music scene, but in the black metal community on a global scale.
Gaahl’s participation on the record was actually a spontaneous idea we got when we were in the studio recording vocals. We needed a scary dark voice for some spoken words on the title track. Our producer Iver Sandøy has worked a lot with Gaahl and knows him well. Suddenly Iver sent us the finished master of The Eldorado Spell and there he was! I remember I got chills down my spine when I first heard it! Unfortunately I did not get the opportunity to be there when it happened, but I am very grateful that he wanted to join!

You’ve released both album’s on Bergen based Apollon Records, how did you end up with them?
We started working with Apollon when we released our first album. They just seemed like very honest and cool people. They did a great job with our first album and we wanted to continue working together on this one.

Opening track “Asphodel” is quite a progressive surprise compared to your previous work, was that an intentional shift in direction or just a result of your jamming and writing?
I think this is just a result of us jamming together in our rehearsal room. We don’t like to think things through so much when we are writing our songs, things just happen. We really liked the folky vibe of the last part and decided to work a bit on that by adding some acoustic guitars and stuff.

Your self-titled debut album was released just at the start of the pandemic, and you haven’t really had much of a chance to play those songs live. For this one, you’ve been playing full capacity, no-restriction shows. How has it been to be able to return to that?
It has been awesome! We just finished a Norwegian tour which included two sold out shows in Oslo and Kristiansand and we will also be playing at the Sonic Whip festival in Netherlands in May which will be very cool!

Which artists would you say played major roles as inspiration when you were young? Were there any musicians or guitarists in particular that inspired you to pick up the guitar, or perhaps a certain song?
I think I must say Black Sabbath was the biggest inspiration for me! I remember my mum took me to see them live in Bergen as a kid in 2005. I was completely mindblown! I loved all kinds of 70s rock music growing up, but my favourite guitar players must have been Tony Iommi, Angus Young and Ritchie Blackmore.

You’re an Orange guy, do you remember your first ever encounter with our amps, whether it was seeing them played live on stage or in a video, or playing them yourself?
I think the first time I discovered Orange amps was when I saw Black Sabbath using them in a TV show from 1970. I guess that’s a bit ironic since Tony was normally a Laney player, but those orange amps looked and sounded so cool! I also remember seeing Matt Pike using his gigantic walls of orange amps and I really liked the sound of them.

What’s your current rig, and how did you end up with that?
My current rig is a Orange OR50 and a PPC212 cabinet. Absolutely love that rig!

If you could add any Orange amps to your rig, which ones would they be, and why?
I would love to own some vintage Orange amps. For example, one of those old pictures only amps or a OR80. I also love the sound of a Rockerverb. Really versatile and great amps.

Over 10 years ago, my Dad (Orange’s Founder and CEO) introduced me to Martin Celmins. Martin, had written the biography of Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green and in doing so was very familiar with very early Orange Amplifiers. Peter was one of our very first endorers who helped launch the company into fame using very early Orange Amplifiers such as the OR200 (aka the Orange Matamp). Over the next few years, we shifted through boxes and boxes of old photos, negatives that had never seen the light of day for decades and started work on what is now known as The Book of Orange. Doing this we found images of my Cliff’s CTI Pixy MK V – a headphone amplifier he designed before he founded Orange in September 1968. Each image had a story behind it and working closely with Dad and Martin, brought me closer and closer to understanding the amount of work, love and dedication had been put into the company far before I was born.

Early iterations of the book was worked on by Richard Crediton-Hughes at Orange, who passed on his content and photos which helped with the creation. However, all said and done, it took around 3 years to complete the book. We launched the book in 2010 and it’s been out of print for a while now which promted us to upload the entire book to our website while adding a timeline feature to make it easy to browse and discover more. Recently having the entire website and the book translated into Spanish for a wider audience to read about our company history.

While working on the book, I did dream of being able to meet some of the original staff at the company in the 1970s that I had only learned about while working on the book. Mick Dines joined Orange in 1968 and is still close friend of my Dad and still works with him to this day. Mick was able to reach out to John James, the man who designed the early Orange Amplifiers including the ‘Pics Only’ amplifier – that amp defined our Orange tone. John agreed to visit us at our office in Borehamwood, England and Mick reached out to and Martin came back to host the interviews! Mick was still in contact with Colin Norfield who ran Orange Hire and he agreed to visit us for a talk about Orange in the 70s. We finally managed to finally convince Mick to appear on camera to talk about how he worked with Cliff on the Orange Cabinet and design – with the distinctive picture frame and tough speaker grill which we still use today.

We’ll continue filming new content about the history of the company and add them to our YouTube channel and this website when oppertunities arise but I wanted to take this moment to invite you to subscribe to our YouTube channel (here) and our Newsletter so you can see these videos as and when we launch them. I look forward to reading your comments and I hope you find them interesting and a pleasure to watch!

Never a legendary brand accompanied its audience at a native level of Spanish, from person to person and with all the magic of more than 50 years of history.

Back in the good ol’ days, it was a popular practice to send a bass guitar signal to a bass amp and a guitar amp at the same time – known as Bi-Amping. This allows the player to keep their low end deep, clean and defined whilst amplifying the mids and top end separately, adding distortion or crisp highs with total control.

This type of setup can produce some enormous tones but typically requires a huge and complicated rig, only possible if you’re Rock ‘n’ Roll royalty. But, if you have to get all this together by yourself? Forget it!

Enter The Bass Butler

Forget amp-in-a-box pedals, The Bass Butler is a whole van-load of gear in a box! Splitting your signal at the input, The Bass Butler features two completely separate, parallel, analogue signal chains, just like a real bi-amp rig. The difference is there’s not an amp in sight.

This is a full time position, we would consider either a Job Share or Part Time application. Working from 108 Ripon Way, Borehamwood, WD6 2JA.

– Assist the admin team with technical enquiries.
– Any other duties as requested by your line manager.

– Electronics fault finding and repair knowledge.
– Electrical safety knowledge – working with dangerous voltages.
– Experience in a similar role.
– Guitar or Bass player

Preferred but non-essential requirements:
– Educated to degree level.
– Brand awareness.
– Knowledge of MI.
– SMD Rework experience.

Personal Qualities:
– Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills

– Ability to work well under pressure, multitask, and maintain keen attention to detail
– Natural tendency to be positive, creative, and curious
– Team player who enjoys collaborating with others
– Genuine empathy toward customers and commitment to diving into the weeds on their
challenges

“The Guitar Butler cleans up the signal, while tightening and boosting the drive. It also reacts so well when dialing in the tone. A true, trustworthy butler in my signal chain.” – Tobee Paik.

We sent guitarist and influencer Tobee Paik one of our new Guitar Butler pedals and this is what happened. (Music starts at 2:27 in case you’re in a rush…)

The UK has lost one of its most talented musicians. John, famous for his worldwide hit “Music (was my first love and it will be my last)” died peacefully in his sleep with his family at his bedside. John played alongside a plethora of artists from Tina Turner, Jimmy Page, Joe Cocker to Andrea Bocelli amongst many others. As Johns manager and friend for over 50 years, John was not only so kind and gentle but a brilliant musician and songwriter on the world stage.

John leaves behind his wife Eileen married 50 years, two children and two grandchildren. Grief is the price we pay for love. He will be greatly missed, but his music will live on forever.
