Voltage selection

The voltage-selector switch and mains fuse are set at the factory for the country or region in which this Orange product is intended to be sold. To prevent serious damage to the product, ensure that the rated AC mains voltage indicated on the product’s rear panel agrees with the mains voltage from your AC mains inlet before connecting the IEC power cable.

If the product is to be used outside of the factory-set region, please ensure the voltage-selector switch (found on the rear or side panel) is set to the correct voltage for the new country/region and that the appropriate mains fuse is fitted in the pull-out fuse tray below the IEC mains input.

The correct mains fuse rating for the product is printed on the chassis (see “Rear Panel Features”). Use only the same type and rating as specified for the product. Be advised that different operating voltages require the use of different types of line cord and attachment plugs. If you are unsure, please contact your Orange dealer.

Before using your amplifier

Always ensure the amp’s volume control(s) are set to zero before switching on the power to the amplifier. To prevent hum and electrical noise, operate your amplifier and instruments as far away from other electronic devices (especially fluorescent and neon lamps) as possible, as devices such as these generate extremely high levels of electronic noise.

Speaker output connections

  1. Make sure the correct speaker is connected at all times during operation.
  2. Do not connect to a speaker load which is less than 8 Ohms in total.
  3. Always connect to a cabinet of an appropriate power rating/handling.
  4. Never use two cabinets of different/mismatched impedance.
  5. Only connect speakers using a quality dedicated speaker cable. Never use an instrument cable.
  6. Never connect headphones to the speaker outputs.

Heads

For one 16 Ohm cabinet — Use the 16 Ω speaker jack socket (rear panel).

For two 16 Ohm cabinets — Use both the 8 Ω speaker jack sockets (rear panel).

For one 8 Ohm cabinet — Use either of the 8 Ω speaker jack sockets (rear panel).

Combos

All Orange valve combos have an internal speaker load of 16 Ω and are connected to the amplifier’s 16 Ohm output at the factory. When using an extension cabinet, only ever connect a 16 Ω cabinet. To connect an extension cabinet to the combo, reconnect the internal speaker jack to either of the 8 Ohm speaker outputs, and connect a 16 Ohm extension cabinet to the other 8 Ohm speaker output. Ensure to reconnect the internal speaker to the 16 Ohm output when an extension cabinet is not attached.

Valves

When powering up, ensure the amplifier is set to the STBY position on the front panel for a minimum of two minutes prior to performance. This will prolong the life of the valves. The HT fuse(s) (rear panel) will blow in the event of output valve failure in order to protect the internal circuitry from damage. Orange recommends output valves are replaced in full matched sets. Orange models fitted with EL34 or 6550 valves will also benefit from a bias adjustment, which should only be undertaken by a qualified technician. When changing the HT fuse, gently push down on the fuse holder and turn anticlockwise to release the fuse.

1. Power

The LED will illuminate when the power switch (rear panel) is set to On.

2. Headphones socket

For use with most stereo headphones with a quarter-inch connection. The socket also features CabSim for a more authentic sound, and can be used to send a signal to a recording console/mixer. The internal speaker is disconnected when the Phones output is in use. Note: to avoid possible hearing damage, do no use headphones at high volume levels for extended periods.

3. Aux In

For use with mp3 players, laptops etc. via a 3.5 mm audio cable. The audio signal is internally summed to mono.

4. Volume

Controls the output volume level.

5. Treble

Adjusts the upper frequencies with up to 20 dB of boost (maximum setting) or cut (minimum setting).

6. Middle

Controls the effect of the Frequency dial with up to 15 dB of boost (maximum setting) or cut (minimum setting).

7. Frequency

Selects the centre frequency of the mid-range control, sweeping from 300 Hz (minimum ) to 2.7 kHz (maximum). Please note: when the mid-range control is in the centre (12 o’clock position), moving the frequency control will have no audible effect.

8. Bass

Adjusts the low-end frequencies with up to 15 dB of boost (maximum setting) or cut (minimum setting).

9. Blend

Controls the amount of gain/upper harmonics blended with the clean signal. The character of the Blend control is defined by where the Gain control is set. Higher Blend settings will also add extra volume. With the Gain set to minimum, the Blend control will have the least effect on the overall sound. The Blend control is located before the EQ controls in the signal path.

10. Gain

Controls the level of gain applied to the upper frequencies. Increasing the gain adds extra harmonics and, at higher settings, heavy distortion. The Gain control works together with the Blend control.

11. PAD switch

Reduces the input signal by 6 dB, maintaining a clean signal with higher-output instruments.

12. Input

Use a quality shielded instrument cable to connect your instrument to the Input jack socket.

13. Tuner

Depress the On/Off button to engage the tuner. The appropriate red LED will illuminate on the display to indicate the note being played. If the green “#” LED also illuminates, this indicates a sharpened note, e.g., (F#). The left arrow LED indicates the played note is flat. The right arrow LED indicates played note is sharp. Adjust the string’s pitch in the direction shown by the arrows until the green “OK” LED is lit. Set the volume to zero for silent tuning if required.

1. Effects loop

Use the effects loop to connect external effects processors/pedals between the amp’s preamp and output stages. Connect the Send socket to the input of external effects, and the Return socket to their outputs.

2. Blend footswitch

Connect a latching footswitch (e.g., Orange FS-1) to remotely engage/defeat the Blend and Gain controls.

3. AC mains input and mains fuse

Refer to “Before Using Your Amplifier”. Connect the supplied IEC cable to the AC mains inlet. Ensure the Power switch is set to Off before connecting the IEC cable.

4. Power

Ensure the amp’s volume controls are set to zero before switching on power to the amplifier. Switch off when not in use.

5. Voltage selector switch

Refer to “Before Using Your Amplifier”

6. Mains fuse

The mains fuse is located in the pull-out tray underneath the AC mains input. If the mains fuse blows, replace this fuse only with the exact type and rating as printed on the chassis. If the mains fuse continues to blow, contact your Orange dealer.
