The scale of the Australian bush fires is truly unprecedented.
Unless you’ve been on holiday on Mars for the last couple of months, the news that Australia is suffering from the largest scale bush fires on record will be something you’re only too aware of.
It’s very hard to grasp exactly how big a problem this actually is, particularly in countries like the UK where wildfires aren’t something that affects us, so a bit of research and the following details begin to emerge:
As of 7th January, 25.5 million acres or 10.5 million hectares of land has been affected by the fires. That’s 32,000 square miles. For those of us in the UK, that’s an area that runs from Portsmouth in the South, as far North as Coventry and from Bath in the West all the way across to London in the East. Another way of putting it, is the whole of Belgium – burned and still ablaze with little end in sight. To try to visualise the fire-front itself is to imagine a picture of Hell… Imagine an unbroken line of fire, stretching from The East Coast of the USA to the West Coast, then back again, then heading back yet again, to the West Coast and getting at least as far as Indiana. That’s the fire-front in a single state alone! More than 1,000 homes have been destroyed, 24 people have lost their lives and estimates are that somewhere between 500 million and 1 billion animals have been burned to death a figure that beggars belief.

WIRES Australia WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc.) is Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation. WIRES has been rescuing and caring for wildlife for over 30 years and WIRES mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same.
Six years ago, on Christmas Eve eve, I was sitting in traffic on the way home from work when an idea popped into my head. I wanted to make a contest. But not just any contest. I wanted to make the entry process simple and I wanted to make the reward huge. So I opened the Facebook mobile app and I wrote a post on the Orange page. It read:
“Wish Granted: Just tell us which Orange product you want and on Christmas day we’ll announce the winners.”
By the time I got home the post had 2,000 like and nearly as many comments. I knew I was onto something.
We had thousands of entries in year one. We had tens of thousands by year two. Each year we kept giving away more and more products. Those first few years I would personally sit at the computer on Christmas Day scrolling through the entries and hand-picking winners. It was tedious and it was time-consuming. But the joy it created made it worth the trouble. (Luckily our very tech-savvy marketing director has made the selection process much easier)
Around year three it was clear that Wish Granted had become part of our annual marketing repertoire. That’s when we began involving Cliff Cooper to help push the promotion via his heartwarming Christmas videos. Throughout 2019 Music for All has continued to promote the positive effects of making music through national campaigns such as Learn to Play Day and Make Music Day as well as its grant giving programme, available to those individuals and communities for whom music making would not be possible without our support.
Our aim is to raise £25,000 before the end of December, a figure which, if achieved, will enable us to fulfill the musical aspirations of 100 disadvantaged young people at the beginning of 2020. What a start to the New Year it would be for each of them to discover that their dream of music making will become a reality. The 100 beneficiaries will include those who are challenged socially, financially and/or physically.

Millie, 12, is autistic and struggles with anxiety and focusing. It was her dream to learn to play the piano. Music for All helped with the provision of a keyboard and lessons with a professional teacher who specialises in supporting those living with neurological and developmental conditions. Her teacher has been very impressed with Millie’s musical aptitude and reports that she ‘has the ears of a Grade 5 student already, as she can distinguish rhythm, timing and complex chord structures just from listening.’ In addition, Millie’s parents believe music has had a positive impact on her well-being as her anxiety levels have decreased dramatically, she’s calmer and happier. We have also just heard that she passed her Grade 1 Exam with a Merit!
Luke, 19, has a serious
medical condition with only limited upper body movement. He loves music making,
but his ability to do this was obviously terribly restricted. Luke asked Music
for All to help with the specialist technology and software to enable him to create
his own music. The charity worked with Luke and his family to provide a sound
beam and appropriate music-making software. Luke is now making music and plays
every day!

1:15 PM – My Crest Edition Headphones finally wake up but they’re super hungover. I bring them a cup of coffee but they’re in a terrible mood. We speak briefly about what they did last night; however, they seem coy. Their attitude worries me. They keep repeating something about how they “hope it’s not on video.”
1:30 PM – I ask if my Crest Edition Headphones are going to work today. They say ‘yes,’ but they want me to call their boss to let him know they won’t be on time. While on the phone with their boss my Crest Edition Headphones are audible in the background, whimpering and crying in between heaves of puking. 10:00 PM – I regain consciousness. Everything is blurry, hazy, almost as if I’m in a dream state. Is this a dream? No. It can’t be. This must be reality. The music has stopped.
Was there ever actually music?

It’s one of the most misunderstood words in
the dictionary.
Yet the history of the word quality can be traced back to Plato. To the philosopher, ‘quality’ is characteristic that exists by itself, and cannot be reduced further. The Latin root from where we get the word ‘qualitas’ translates as ‘of what kind’, or simply put relative to the need.
The Quality of Orange Amplifiers
Orange Amplifiers might be synonymous with the grunt and grit of analogue circuitry, oozing with creamy mids, distinctive lows and highs, accurately representing the full frequency range. The beefed-up brother of the British sound; gnarly and rugged, but approachable and easy to understand.
Much of our modern equipment stems from the ideas of Orange Technical Director, Adrian Emsley.
Adrian designs and builds amps, but he worked in all the places that you’d find amps being pushed to their limit, like out on the road and in the studio. Transport vibration, dropping (it happens), bashing (even more likely to happen), temperatures changing from hot to cold, the damp humid air of a sweaty stage to arid conditions outside, it’s a brutal life, that of a rig.
Then there’s the function of the amp itself!

Beastly Thinking
What Adrian and his team do is make amplifiers that are complexly simple. More time is taken in the design stage to make an Orange Amplifer playable with little user input.
Orange Amplifiers are designed to easily dial in a tone. There’s not much most front panels, removing the need for endless twiddling of knobs and button switching. Instead, by using an all analogue signal path our amps are voiced with a distinct character, from the point of plugging in, it sounds good. Which means more time making music, less time fighting to get the sound you want.

As Little Design as Possible
When it comes to designing amps, lots of care, consideration, time and heaps of perspiration go into the design stage. Generally speaking, Orange Amplifiers have fewer components in the signal chain and here’s why:
Remove the complexity and there’s less to go wrong.
So where your money is going is on higher-spec components that work as they should. Components with the lowest failure rates and over-engineered, so whatever you throw at your amplifier, it will continue to operate the same as the last time you switched it on.
Take for example the trace lines on the PCBs. It’s not something that screams rock and roll, but when you get right down into it, it’s about as hardcore as it gets.
As you push your amp to its limits, be that continuous operation or driving it hard as hell, heat can build up. That heat eventually wears out components and then your in trouble. We lay extra-thick PCB traces to prevent impedance from building up unwanted heat, so the amps keep going for longer.
That’s exactly why Orange Amplifiers are favoured by touring rig companies worldwide. They’re a reliable workhorse that can take the punishing rigours of the road.
The Roadies Friend
Moving, lifting, stacking, packing. All the wondrous jobs that eventually take their toll on your gear. Mick Dines (of Orange Amplifiers) knew this well and the result was one of the most solid speaker cabs on the market.
Back when he designed the first cabs, Mick Dines didn’t cut corners and much of the design remains the same today. There’s no illusion of strength, as Cliff Cooper, founder and CEO explains:
“The 4×12 was built to be very strong and featured a baffle centre post, 13-ply (18mm) birch-faced marine plywood and a tough orange vinyl cloth covering called Rexine. The use of Basketweave on the grill really helped to define the ‘Orange sound’.”
Take a look at the bottom of the cab and you’ll find wooden ‘skids’ instead of plastic castors. Skids make moving gear easier but they also acoustically couple the cabinet to the stage, enhancing the bass response and transmit all that power right through your bones.
Endurance without Compromise
At the very heart of the valve amp is the output transformer. We always over spec our transformers, and there’s a reason for this:
An under spec transformer leads to excess heat being
produced inside an amp, ultimately causing problems over long-term operation.
Secondly, if underpowered, the transformer will
saturate, throttling the output signal. This will cause losses to the bottom
and top of the frequency range rather than passing the whole bandwidth.
Equipped for the Modern Musician
Pedals, pedals, pedals; there’s so many
tone choices available, but to get the most of your gear, consider the FX loop.
Your amp, pedals and instrument all need to
work in harmony together. Too much signal into your pedal board and the circuit
overloads causing distortion. On the way back in, you want sufficient level to
drive the power amp.

While digital modeling is pretty incredible, we believe the costs outweigh the benefits in comparison to solid-state circuitry like in our Crush range. We design amps that are instantly playable; so you’re straight into making music, not tone hunting.
